NPT

During the 2023 Review of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), our participation was diverse and noteworthy, addressing multiple aspects related to peace, security, and sustainable development. We collaborated with the Mexican Network for Nuclear Education, Training, and Research (REMECIN) in the development of a joint working paper. This document, presented during the NPT review, highlighted the importance of recognizing the capabilities of nuclear technologies for sustainable development, emphasizing the need to use these technologies responsibly and safely to advance toward a more sustainable future.
Additionally, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs invited us to participate in a side event organized by the United States under the theme "Stepping it up for diversity, equity and inclusion at the NPT Review Conference." During this event, hundreds of diplomats, policymakers, and civil society representatives gathered to exchange ideas on the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. The high-level panel at this event included Gustavo Zlauvinen, President of the NPT Review; Maritza Chan, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations; Ann Linde, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden; Bonnie Jenkins, Under Secretary of Arms Control and International Security of the United States; Izumi Nakamitsu, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs; Nomsa Michelle Ndongwe, moderator; and Jorge Valderrábano, representative of Ágora.

Moreover, we participated in another side event organized by BASIC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and UNODA, where young participants formed four working groups to articulate and prioritize actions in the three pillars of the NPT and on the topic of equity, diversity, and inclusion. These groups formulated implementable and innovative recommendations to advance in these areas and presented their findings to a panel of leaders. You can read our public policy recommendations here.
Our participation in this event reflected our commitment to promoting inclusive and effective policies in key areas such as nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. We will continue to be committed to building a safer and more just world for all, and we will continue to work in collaboration with international partners to achieve these shared goals.
